Butch Cat is the tetartagonist in the Tom and Jerry series. He is a black and white alley cat whose appearances generally vary from a friend or ally to a rival of Tom Cat.

Biography[]

Tom and Jerry original cartoons[]

Butch was originally created by Hugh Harman for the MGM short The Alley Cat along with Toodles Galore; a character model sheet for the short refers to him as Tom.[1] His first appearance in the Tom and Jerry cartoons was Baby Puss, alongside Topsy and the already-established Meathead.

Butch's second appearance was in Springtime for Thomas, he becomes a rival to Tom over Toodles Galore or and her affections which also happened in a couple of shorts and tv series (including the 1951 short Casanova Cat.

Starting from A Mouse in a House, Butch compete with Tom in order to catch Jerry, he and Tom work together throughout the short (but both fail miserably) to catch Jerry. Butch is the leader of the Alley Cats (usually Lightning, Topsy, and Meathead) who are friends with Tom and at times, join him in chasing or torment Jerry.

Tom and Jerry Tales[]

Butch also appears in the Tom and Jerry Tales series. In the first season, Butch's voice sounds like a Bobcat Goldthwait impersonation (which matches with how he sounds in Tom and Jerry: The Magic Ring). In season 2, his voice changes to a more generic Brooklyn "tough guy" voice. In the episode Beach Bully Bingo, he appears in red swimwear. He also appears more muscular, having well-trained pecs and stomach muscles. He also flexes his arm muscles and slightly appears to have abs. Some people think that this muscular bodybuilder cat who is as strong as Spike isn't the same as Butch.

In The Tom and Jerry Show (2014), Butch is smitten with Dollface and flirts with her, and also tries to make his rounds with Toots as well. Here, Butch seems to have a closer friendship with Meathead than he does with Lightning or Topsy, as the two are a duo with Butch being smart and Meathead being dumb dynamic and elaborate with each other many times.

Characteristics[]

Personality[]

Since Butch has had many appearances in the Hanna-Barbara era (1940-1958) and the modern era of Tom and Jerry, Butch has a wide range of behaviors.

Initially, Butch is a loud-mouth cat, a trait that continues to the modern era. He often talks, even when it has nothing to do with his business. His mischievous antics sometimes provoke anger from Tom or Spike.

He often parties in Tom's house alongside his gang, and like Tom, is an enemy of Jerry. Butch loves "stealing" girls that Tom is trying to score with.

He's a womanizer, as you see in Springtime for Thomas, Casanova Cat, and other shorts. Curiously, in the Tom and Jerry Tales episode Beach Bully Bingo, he has an unusual crush on Jerry's girlfriend, Toots. In The Tom and Jerry Show (2014), he's a scammer in the episode "Wish Bone". He trades Tom for his cat food, just for his bone he found in the trash. In another episode, The Devil You Know, after he had a nightmare, he started acting nice to mostly everyone yet went way too overboard with his kindness, causing Tuffy to go back to him in the middle of the night to try and get him back to his old ways.

In another Season 4 episode called The Maltese Pigeon, he threatened to slam a pigeon statue (which had Crooked Eddie in it), the narrator taunts and dares him to do it. He later asks if he's talking to him, and the narrator answers his question and says "Yeah, you don't have the guts.".

Butch gets offended at this comment, later on in the episode Butch states: "Are you calling me a chicken?". He gets angrier as chicken noises go off and he begins to put on a tough guy act. But, however, after this incident, he gets slammed on the head by Crooked Eddie, who breaks free from the concrete statue.

Appearance[]

Butch is a black Tuxedo Cat with white (or yellow) and black eyes. Though usually consistent in his appearance, in Tom and Jerry: The Magic Ring and Tom and Jerry Tales, Butch has a bandage wrapped around his tail, a detail that was seen with Lightning and Meathead in the original short films.

War of the Whiskers[]

Butch appears in Tom and Jerry in War of the Whiskers, he is a challenger, and he is the one of the two skillful fighters of the eleven characters. his punches and kicks are similar to Tom except faster.

When he wins, he will do a victory dance, but when defeated, he collapses to the ground and slaps himself.

In Challenge mode, He is the only character to fight Lion. he also fights Jerry twice (Normal and Monster Jerry).

Trivia[]

  • Butch Cat has been married two times, his first wife the white cat from Blue Cat Blues and it might be confirmed that Butch and his wife divorced because Butch got drunk, and when Butch met Dollface, he flirts with her and she became his girlfriend/second wife. She is even acknowledged as being his wife in "All That Glitters".
    • Despite this, Butch flirts with and is in love with Toots (who erroneously credited as "Toodles Galore") in certain episodes of The Tom and Jerry Show that were released even after Dollface was introduced, such as "Charm School Dropouts", "Hangin' Tough", and "Tom Quixote". This could imply that Butch is in love with both Toots and Dollface, especially they're both highly attractive female cats.
  • In most modern-day Tom and Jerry productions, a jazz-styled guitar riff plays whenever Butch speaks or is on-screen.
    • Some of these musical instances are very reminiscent to the theme song of Dog City.
  • In "Duck Sitting", Butch mentions that he is allergic to goldenrod.
  • In "Top Dog" reveals that Butch has a fear of snakes.
  • In Hanna-Barbera version from 40s & 50s, some of Butch's appearances always involve a classic song called Over The Rainbow.
  • He gained yellow eyes like Tom in The Tom and Jerry Show (2014) and New York
